Pour ceux qui ne connaissent pas Bintus, sachez que c’est l’éminence grise derrière l’entité Power Vacuum. Depuis 2012, l’anglais Milo Smee se consacre à se projet mais pour comprendre l’ampleur du travail de l’artiste, il faut commencer par le commencementt, c’est-à-dire Chrome Hoof, un groupe de musique à l’esthétique délirante mais travaillée et à la musique puissante et ô combien jouissive. Le monsieur a fondé la chose avec son frère Leo pour finalement aboutir à un groupe assez dense comprenant une petite dizaine de personnes. Parallèlement, l’artiste hyperactif développe en solo l’alias Binary Chaffinch sur les labels Dissident et celui de Cosmo Vitelli, I’m a Cliché. Power Vacuum ne revêt pas forcément la même dimension familiale que Chrome Hoof et ne joue pas dans le même registre que Binary Schaffinch . Le projet Bintus est autrement plus personnel puisqu’il s’agit de Milo solo sur son propre label. Le résultat en revanche est encore une fois une musique puissante, jouissive et s’inscrit dans la même sensation de spontanéité. Sans détour le son de Bintus vous frappe dans le plexus comme un véritable « coup de surin en pleine poitrine » (Joey Starr), vous tapez du pied et travaillez votre mouvement de bassin. La musique est brut et se contente d’aller à l’essentiel elle va de pair avec l’esthétique du label simple mais codifiée (typographie, sens de l’humour) qui donne le sentiment d’une démarche un peu punk. C’est après la présentation de son live intégralement analogique au Berghain et un album intense que l’artiste nous a tapé dans l’œil. Un live dansant et violent marqué par une omniprésence de sonorités raves et acides matinée de kick digne d’un batteur de groupe de hardcore. Le Phonocast oscille entre techno et electro, il est sombre mais dansant. Bonne écoute!
For those who don’t know Bintus, please note that he is the brain behind Power Vacuum. Since 2012, Milo Smee dedicated his time to this project, but to understand the work of the english artist as a whole, we’ll have to begin by its beginning : Chrome Hoof, a band with a delirious and detailed aesthetic, for a powerful and great music. He founded the band with his brother Leo and finally ended with a thick formation counting up to ten people. Simultaneously the hyperactive producer developed a solo project called Binary Schaffinch on two imprints, Dissident and Cosmo Vitelli’s label, I’am a Cliché. Power Vacuum didn’t care for the familial aspect as Chrome Hood did and differed in style with his previous alias. Bintus’s project is more personal ; it’s about Milo producing alone for his own imprint. However the result is still a powerful and visceral music enliven with a sensation of spontaneity. Without no gambit, Bintus’s sound punches you in the plexus like a genuine stab in the chest ; you can’t escape from tapping the beat with your feet, shaking your hips. The music goes straight to the point and matches with the label’s aesthetic (simple but codified with its fonts and humor), giving you the feeling of a punk approach. After listening his live at Berghain and to a great first LP, we gave to the artist the attention he deserved. The live act was groovy through violent bits with traces of rave and acid sounds and kicks as if out of an hardcore drum kit. The Phonocast goes from techno to electro, it’s a bit dark but really danceable and energizing. Good listening!
