Damon Bell est originaire de San Diego, actif depuis presque deux décennies, l’artiste de la côte ouest a commencé par mixer du jazz, de la salsa et du Hip Hop et n’a jamais cessé d’élargir ses centres d’intérêt. Polyvalent, il est parfois percussionniste et joue de plusieurs instruments à vent, le djing pour Damon Bell est finalement une extension naturelle de sa passion pour la musique, d’ailleurs cela se voit lorsqu’on observe le large panel d’artistes avec qui il a pu tourner ou se produire: Jazzanova, Femi Kuti, Bugz in the Attic, Dead Prez ou encore The Roots. La diversité des goûts de l’artiste transparaît d’ailleurs sur son premier album “Blues for the Lybian” qui marque clairement un entre deux entre poly-rythmes d’origine afro et musique de club contemporaine. Appelé Chief Connoisseur par ses proches, Damon Bell aura sortie presque l’intégralité de sa discographie sur Deepblak Recordings le label d’Aybee. L’artiste ne cesse de se démarquer par son habileté à créer des liens entre les genres, en témoigne ce Phonocast. Le set commence disco pour finalement finir sur des sons plus house et freaky. Damon Bell comes from San Diego and is making music for almost two decades; the west-coast-based artist started by spinning jazz, salsa and hip-hop and never stopped to widen his interests. As a polyvalent character, he is also practising percussion and wind instruments; djing arrives there as a natural extension of his passion for music. It becomes evident when you check few names in the artist’s list with who Damon Bell toured or performed: Jazzanova, Femi Kuti, Bugz in the Attic, Dead Prez or The Roots. His taste for diversity is also apparently put forward in his brilliant first album “Blues For Lybian” that melt poly-rhythms and contemporary dance music nicely. Regularly called Chief connoisseur by his close surrounding, Damon Bell released almost all his records on Aybee’s imprint, Deepblak Recordings. Through his releases and his sets the artist distinguish himself with a great ability to create bridges between genres like in this Phonocast.
