Rubadub

We invited a very special guest for the 20th Happy Meal. In a few word Rubadub is the heart of the Glasgow music scene, they have a very specialist selection of underground music in their shop and lots of rare synthesisers and hardware. Let’s see what they prepared for us !

CS505919-01A-BIG Doc Daneeka ‎– Treptow – Numbers (NMBRS39)

The eponymous Side A on the Docs new offering, a banger titled Treptow, is designed to move heads and feet via the medium of thunderous kick drums and slamming piano stabs, and showcases some of his darkest, starkest work to date. The pounding, grunting rhythms of the A-side could sit pride of place amongst the back-catalogue of any of the Detroit’s intense second wave godfathers, while its deeper flip-side, ‘Paname (Piano Vers)’, in its full near nine-minute glory, takes a similar propulsive formula but via a journey of keys and filters that expands and builds gradually to dazzling effect.

CS505919-01A-BIG Various – This Is House Music EP #6 – Headphoniq (Q011)

You know you can expect a certain level of quality when Ron Trent is involved in a record, and so it is on this release for US stable Headphoniq. The man shares a gem from the vaults in the form of “Dancin (Lost Prescription)”, keeping things simple with a subtle Bee Gees lick, steady drums and all of that slick string stabbing business he does so well. Jordan Fields meanwhile has a stoutly modern sounding approach by comparison that packs a mean punch, keeping the chords slender and dropping a mean vocal sample. Morgan Alexander is on a mellower deep house tip with some choice metallic tones in amongst the gently grooving beat, before Leandre smooths things out with a sample rich groove laced with very strong funk on “Ligne De Mire”.

CS505919-01A-BIGMr Tophat & Art Alfie – Karlovak Chrome (KVC 3)

Continuing to fly out their widely lauded take on contemporary deep house, Mr Tophat and Art Alfie present the third in their Karlovak Chrome series with some decidedly out-there constructions that reveal the more experimental side to their productions. “Don’t Step On The Baby” keeps things very subtle indeed, with a muffled kick drum and faint whispers of melody weaving a hypnotic message for all the subliminal shufflers out there. “Orange Rain” takes a similar tact of holding back rather than giving out, letting a heavily sedated beat thud out amongst a listless crowd of tones and drones with odd flashes of psychedelic colour.

CS505919-01A-BIGBluntman Deejay – Esoteric (Real) EP – All Caps (AC005)

Without further or due we present to you 1/3 of star group Aquarian Foundation!! – Bluntman Deejay Bluntman Deejay offers up two new strains from the smokey labs of the BackWoods. borne from the crucible of vapour experimentalism, cosmic flaneury and spiritual forgery an inorganic chemistry of drum machine and plant matter n-xtracted and VAC purged for ultimate dancefloor purity ratings. Esoteric Communion A meditation on the separation between spirit and body gazing and sprinting spliced (sliced) at rush hour. a fast-approaching sensation that is both psychedelic and super calming on the mind and body. Astat (Real) Strawberry cough blooming for the smoke eaters. A rotating earthy motif derived from the tonal equations of the ethiopian master Mulatu Astatqe. CS505919-01A-BIGGemini Sounds – R U Afraid – Chiwax (CGTX003)

The sorely missed talents of Spencer Kincy have long been recognized as some of the most vital in the Chicago house story, and Chiwax have chosen to shed light on one of his lesser known but utterly essential releases that previously came to light on Earth Recordings.

CS505919-01A-BIGMMM – Jack 7 – MMM (MMM7)

Erik ‘Errorsmith’ Wiegand and Michael ‘Fiedel’ Fiedler return with a seventh transmission in their intermittent and long-running MMM series, brandishing two cuts calibrated perfectly for dancefloor execution. With a title like “Jack 7” you know what to expect from the A Side, but as ever Fiedler and Wiegand’s well honed productions skills set them apart as a rave ready acid line parades up and down the channels over an increasingly ragged rhythm. The way the playful synth lines get introduced is expert. Flip it and “Synchro” is delay laden, broken yet rolling techno lit up by some devious Grime indebted keys.

CS505919-01A-BIGHead High aka Shed – Megatrap – Power House (POWERHOUSE505)

Right on cue, Rene Pawlowitz drops another set of Head High bangers just in time for summer. While previous releases from his much-loved Power House imprint have been short but sweet affairs, the brilliantly named Megatrap offers a full nine tracks of what Hard Wax have referred to quite concisely as “uplifting Breakbeat Techno in golden 1990s leaning style”. Those who have heard the previous Head High material will know exactly what to expect.

CS505919-01A-BIG Prostitutes – Petit Cochon – Spectrum Spools (SP035)

Prostitutes aka James Donadio has released his beautifully odd cluster of sounds on some of the hottest labels around, including our favourite Opal Tapes, and the uncompromising Mira series together with the likes of Shifted under his Covered In Sand moniker. This time, however, he lands a considerably larger role in the form of a debut LP for the ever-impressive Spectrum Spools, a label that has put out everything from Container’s first tracks to a reissue of the gnarliest techno sounds by Donato Dozzy and Nuel under their Aquaplano guise. Petit Cochon is experimental music at its purest, where Donadio successfully blends ritualistic drones together with industrial landscapes and metallic swirls of percussion. Another Spools classic…

CS505919-01A-BIGAutomatic Tasty – The Rites of Wrong – Wrong Island Communications (COMMUNCATION3)

Wrong Island returns with yet another big hitter, welcoming Automatic Tasty to the fold with a 7 track mini-LP. The record starts with a Cassette Boy style attack on the emptiness of daytime TV before firing into a half hour of psychedelic acid house. From the bleepy funk of A Public Service Announcement to the all-out acid assault of Cheers Curtis this record is like what we think Drexciya would have sounded like if theyd written tracks about the hills and fields of Ireland instead of underwater kingdoms, this is perfect summertime music as good for drinking cider in the Sun as it would be for the dancefloor. Limited to 350 copies. Mastered at Curved. With full colour picture sleeve by photographer Garry MacClennan & A4 insert.
